Meet: Joe
Joe Dumas, Ph.D., was one of the early contributors to the User eXperience profession. He was turned on to User eXperience at the 1982 Gaithersburg conference on Human Factors in Computer Systems. Having worked as a cognitive psychologist and a human factors specialist, he found his calling in high-tech product User eXperience. For most of his career, Joe worked as a consultant to high-tech companies focusing on user interface design and evaluation methods. His clients included Microsoft, Oracle, Motorola, and the New York Stock Exchange. Most recently he has been consulting with Oracle from his home office on Cape Cod. Throughout the past decade he taught a usability evaluation course in Bentley University’s graduate program as well as tutorials at User eXperience conferences.
Joe holds a B. A. in Psychology from Boston College and a Ph.D. from SUNY Buffalo in Cognitive Psychology. He is co-editor in chief of the Journal of Usability Studies, the online journal of the Usability Professionals’ Association. He is the author of three books on User eXperience methods. He is most proud of his book with Ginny Redish, A Practical Guide to Usability Testing, which many user experience professionals have read as their introduction to the profession.
